The Magic Castle is a specialized nightclub for magicians, magic enthusiasts and is the clubhouse for the Academy of Magical Arts. Located in Hollywood, California; it houses performances, a restaurant, several bars and a private club. It tune with the theme of magic, there are no external doors to the castle and to gain entrance you need to find the owl sculpture and whisper a secret phrase to it!
Planning a Visit
You should be aware that the Magic Castle is a private membership club; you can’t just walk up, knock on the door and expect to be let in. There is no age limit to membership nor do you have to be a professionally performing magician.
With a year’s membership, you can attend as many performances at the castle as you wish. The only limitation there is on age is that members under 21 are not able to attend evening performances. If you would like to explore the secrets of the castle just once, and you know a member, you can visit on a guest pass provided by the member.
If you have the privilege of attending the Magic Castle, which is located north of the Kodak theatre, street parking is limited so be ready to pay for valet parking. Expected attire for the night is formal, a shirt and tie is appropriate.
If you aren’t dressed to standard, the right clothing can be conjured up for you at the front desk! Sneakers are another matter, sorry, no magic for those. Make sure to wear appropriate dress shoes. The performances and atmosphere at the club is formal and as such, the attire should match and add a little magic to the night.
And Now on With the Show
There are three main rooms with scheduled shows; the Close-up Gallery, the Parlor of Prestidigitation, and the Palace of Mystery. Spontaneous performances also take place in the different bars, delighting unsuspecting patrons.
There is even a resident ghost, Irma, who takes musical requests. As stated earlier, there is no age restriction on membership. Performances by the junior members is during brunch on Saturdays and Sundays where all ages are invited to witness the spectacular shows.
The Magic Castle opened for business in 1963 after being converted from a family home. For over forty years it has been a backbone of the magical performing industry and even hosts an “Academy of Magical Arts Awards” each year, celebrating the talent within the magical community.
