A magician, also known as an illusionist, is an entertainer who performs illusions that seem impossible or supernatural in nature. Audiences are awed and stunned by the performances and wonder how the magician can attempt such fantastical feats.
Successful magicians have mastered the magic tricks or effects used in their acts and they understand how to captivate and lead their audience. Deep focus, attention to detail and discipline are character traits required to become a flourishing illusionist.
Mastering magic effects require that the magician practice them until his timing and technique are perfected. One slip and the trick will fall apart in front of the audience. Understanding the mechanisms used and studying the effects are crucial to success.
Hand in hand with perfecting the effects is managing the audience. The magician understands that he must be in control of, and direct, the audience’s attention. Distractions and misdirection are the two main ways that a magician directs his audience’s focus.
He keeps them focused on what he wants and distracted from elements of the trick effect that are taking place, like a switch of movement of props. He must make sure, though, that he has captured their attention right at the start, in order to control it.
The ability to get inside people’s heads and get them to believe the impossible is goal of all magicians during every performance. It takes a great amount of focus and level of desire from the audience to witness the unimaginable.
Secrecy is strongly upheld within the illusionist community and breaking the confidentiality of a magical act is taken very seriously. Magicians will not share the secrets of their tricks with the audience and prior to becoming a member of a professional magician’s association, an oath is sworn.
The oath varies in its wording but in its essence it is a sworn statement to not reveal the magician’s tricks to any non-magician and to not perform a trick unless it can be performed well enough to maintain the illusion.
Violating the oath will not only affect an individual magician’s performance, but it will also affect the work of magicians around the world. These illusionists have dedicated years of practice and passion to their craft, and it is a betrayal to reveal their secrets.
If you aspire to be a professional magician then remember it takes hard work, dedication, and loyalty in magic. You must be committed to both your craft and the fellowship of magicians. Now get out there and entertain the world!
